Retrieving Trial – 25 – 27 March 2016

Our March trial was held over the three day Easter long weekend this year.  This is the first time we have run the three day Retrieving Trial which is the largest in the State.   It was held in the Sale area so logistically took some organising!

Fortunately we had a lot of support from the people down in Gippsland and our thanks to go to them.   In Particular:

  • Field & Game for allowing us to camp at Heart Morass and preparing the area for us to camp just inside the gate.  FGA have always been a great supporter of Retrieving trials and the people camping there willingly donated $350 to go towards their WET Trust.

  • The Boulton family who provided their property for two days.   This is the first time a trial has been held there and they went out of their way to accommodate us.  They stock from the trial area enabling easy access for all the stakes.   This is an ideal place to hold trials and the retrieving fraternity are extremely grateful for the opportunity to use their property.

  • The Gippsland Retrieving Club for liaising with Field & Game and the Bolton family.  Also for organising the camp – assessing the trial sites and organising where to put the runs and assisting the judges, etc.

The smooth running of trials always depends on the competitors helping out and making sure they are there in time to run.  With so many competitors with multiple dogs in multiple stakes this was especially important and they all worked together to make it happen – thank you.  A special thank you to Dean and Rocky Furnell who did not have a dog to run but came all three days to steward for the Novice Stakes.

Commiserations to our Novice judge on Saturday – Leanne O’Sullivan who ended up in hospital with a broken finger and to Heather Ellis all the way from WA only to break her wrist the day before the trial!   (Neither connected to the running of the trial).

The trial itself was a great success.  The weather was perfect for camping and trialling.  Unusually, the Heart was nearly dry so dogs had mostly splashing water for the retrieves on Friday and for us very few mosquitoes!  Entries were good with competitors from Western Australia, Queensland and NSW plus the Easter Bunny who arrived all the way from Bundaberg in time for vetting on Sunday morning.
